As part of this activity, we interviewed young women from France, Italy, Portugal and Greece who participated in the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge as team members and organisers. Through their stories, they share their experiences, challenge stereotypes and encourage the next generation of girls to discover the exciting world of STEM.

When people think about engineering competitions, they often imagine advanced technologies, innovative designs and technical challenges. While these elements certainly define the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, there is another equally important story unfolding: the story of the young people who make innovation possible.
During the event, we interviewed young women from France, Italy, Portugal and Greece who participated either as members of engineering teams or as part of the organizing committee. Rather than speaking about girls in STEM, we decided to give them the opportunity to speak for themselves. Although they came from different countries, educational systems and disciplines, their experiences revealed similar messages.
Each participant introduced herself, presented her team and described her role within the project. More importantly, they reflected on what the experience had taught them—not only from a technical perspective but also on a personal level. Through their personal stories, they shared what motivated them to join STEM projects, the skills they developed and the experiences they valued most.
Their answers highlighted that engineering is about much more than technology. They spoke about teamwork, communication, leadership, resilience, creativity and problem-solving. They also emphasised the confidence they gained by working on real engineering challenges alongside students from different countries.
The participants also took part in a fun "Myth or Reality?" activity, responding to common stereotypes such as "Engineering is only for boys" .Their message was clear: these outdated beliefs do not reflect today's reality. Curiosity, determination and collaboration—not gender—are the qualities that lead to success in engineering.
Finally, they shared encouraging advice for younger girls considering STEM studies: believe in yourself, stay curious and never let stereotypes limit your ambitions.
By giving these young women the opportunity to share their experiences, we transformed an international engineering competition into a powerful educational activity promoting inclusion, equal opportunities and female participation in STEM.
Their voices remind us that the future of engineering depends on diversity—and that every girl should feel confident that she belongs in STEM.
